End of life for Magento 1 payment gateway

We had been supporting the www.shavers.co.uk M1 site since 2018, although this stopped in June 2020 because M1 was no longer supported and no new development was taking place. Shavers reached out to us recently as they required urgent attention to their checkout. The 3DSv2 compliance deadline was imminently approaching and the payment module they had configured would not meet this new standard - leaving them without a payment gateway on their site.

3DSv2 is the latest authentication protocol which allows issuing banks to verify the identity of card holders when purchasing to ensure merchants are secure and keep fraud to a minimum. If these standards are not met by the deadline the business would need to temporarily cease online trading until this is resolved because they would not be able to take online transactions.

Because the site is currently on Magento 1, the latest Braintree module was not supported on this platform, as it required a minimum of Magento version 2.2. Looking at alternative payments providers, Opayo (previously SagePay) was considered the best solution as the client already had an existing Opayo merchant account to facilitate the switch, it was also confirmed that the Opayo module still supports Magento 1 versions and crucially, it is 3DSv2 complaint.

Due to the urgency of this task, we made sure to prioritise this implementation. The entire process from the client consulting to having the module installed and configured on the live site taking payments took no more than two days.

However, we do have to point out that because the site is currently running Magento 1, which is now deprecated and no longer supported by Adobe with security updates, it does not meet PCI Security Council standards which can lead to monetary fines and site vulnerability.
